A large specialty paper mill’s size press foam problems were causing sheet defects, high broke costs and unwanted additional labor costs due to excessive roll handling and slabbing. The mill produces specialty papers and nonwovens used in a wide variety of applications including medical and food grades. Aries was asked to help improve product quality.
An Aries plant audit found that entrained air in the size press solution appeared to be a major contributor to tenacious foam that built up in the size press and caused the sheet defects. Mechanical changes to the size press solution handling were investigated as part of the audit and while some improvements were made, they could not fully overcome the make down and feed system’s air entrainment. It was concluded that a defoamer was needed. Samples of the various size press solutions were tested with the Aries Recirculating Foam Generator. These studies found that Aries 576 significantly reduced foam in the size press solution. Aries 576 provided superior deaeration and foam reduction when compared to a wide range of competitive defoamers. In addition, Aries 576 met the stringent FDA compliance requirements of the problematic grades.
Aries 576 Defoamer’s machine performance matched the laboratory testing resulting in significantly less foam in the size press, make down and run tanks. Improved sheet quality, higher yields and greater productivity were realized.
