Illinois – Air Stripper

An Illinois groundwater remediation site removing a variety of organic compounds utilizing an air stripper experienced substantial maintenance shutdowns due to accumulated solids in the feed pump, bag filter and air stripper. The system was shut down once a month for acid cleaning. Aries performed water and scale analysis to determine that calcium carbonate was the primary compound forming scale in the system. Aries Chemical recommended Aries 2908, a specially formulated sequestering agent designed to prevent the precipitation of the scale forming compounds. The addition of Aries 2908 has resulted in the system being operated without shutdowns for cleaning. With the addition of Aries 2908, the system is only shut down semiannually for inspection. No scale cleaning or removal has been required since Aries 2908 was added to process. The treated water is discharged to a receiving body of water using a NPDES permit.

New York – Air Stripper with Activated Carbon Polishing

A New York State groundwater remediation site removing a variety of organic compounds utilizing an air stripper followed by activated carbon filters encountered substantial maintenance shutdowns due to accumulated solids in the air stripper. The system was shut down every three weeks to clean the air stripper. Aries performed water and scale analysis to determine that calcium carbonate and iron hydroxide were the primary compounds forming scale in the air stripper. Aries Chemical recommended Aries 541, a specially formulated sequestering agent designed to prevent the precipitation of the scale forming compounds. The addition of Aries 541 has resulted in the system being operated without shutdowns for cleaning. With the addition of Aries 541, the air stripper is only shut down semi-annually for inspection. Neither scale cleaning nor removal has been required since Aries 541 was added to process. An additional benefit was a doubling of the activated carbon filters life following Aries 541’s application. The treated water is discharged to a receiving body of water using a NPDES permit.
